R&D Centre for Disasters & Resilience
The multi-disciplinary Research and Development Centre for Disaster Management and Emergency Response was established in 2009 with the aim of building a centre which will not only be a key national centre of expertise but which will also establish an international reputation for R & D in this expanding and increasingly significant field.
Researchers in this field have close working links with police and fire & rescue services, the Wales Resilience Forum and with the Disaster and Development Centre at Northumbria University. Glamorgan is the lead university in Wales for pilot phase of the new ELRHA project – Enhancing Learning and Research for Humanitarian Assistance, sponsored by the funding councils and being carried out by the Emergencies Team from Save the Children. Glamorgan is co-sponsor of the successful “Dealing with Disasters” conference series.
Expertise in the area is found right across the University’s five Faculties and includes:
o Disaster healthcare and nutrition
o Natural Hazards and Planning for Resilience
o Business Continuity Planning
o Behaviour of buildings and bridges under extreme loads
o Industrial Risk Management
o Emergency Services
o Water resource management and flood risk assessment
o Post Disaster Forensic Investigation
